Background and Focus

One Community is a locally grown initiative, created by community and voluntary groups and residents in Tilbury and Chadwell, for the benefit of the community. Local people are aware of the planned growth, regeneration and change and want to be able to help to shape that change and ensure that existing local residents are able to participate in and benefit from the social and economic opportunities that arise. OCDT will focus its first year on:

Organisation: setting up office, website, policies
Empowerment: community engagement & consultation
Buildings: ensure affordable buildings for community
Jobs: jobs and training opportunities for local people
Projects: Social, economic and environmental projects
Neighbourhood Renewal: working in partnership to meet local needs

The title, “One Community” reflects the aspiration for the future - to bring together local people and groups to create a place to be proud of. It also reflects our desire to address the current reality of existing divisions of race, class, and geography, and the concern at the evidence of worsening community cohesion.

Objectives

To ensure a range of accessible, well-managed facilities are available at affordable rates for the local community in Chadwell and Tilbury
To promote effective partnership working between all sectors to ensure that the needs of the community in Chadwell and Tilbury are properly understood and addressed
To develop a sustainable community ‘anchor’ organisation that has credibility with all sectors and listens, learns, shares best practice and, above all, makes things happen.
To develop a growing community of local champions with the credibility to engage, encourage, advocate and promote an inclusive and enterprising ‘can-do’ culture
To encourage a community in Chadwell and Tilbury that recognises and realises its full potential
To encourage the community of Chadwell and Tilbury to embrace change whilst also celebrating its rich and diverse history
To work for safe, clean, welcoming and vibrant town centres where people want to go.
